May 1st, 2010 (Saturday): Conference Workshops

7:30am – 9:00am

Top 7 Lessons for Runners: Dr. Jason Karp

Despite the popularity of running, most runners, coaches and trainers don't know how to train effectively. Imperfect training will prevent runners from meeting their potential and can even cause injuries. This presentation will take both a scientific and coaching view of the training process and discuss some the most important lessons for advising and coaching runners.

9:15am – 10:45am

Take It to the Top:  Peak Your Cycling Performance: Jacki Gardner

Discover effective training techniques to optimize your personal cycling performance. Whether you are a beginning triathlete, a seasoned cyclist or anyone in between, this workshop is for you. Join us to learn how to train intelligently by developing and executing a training plan – much like building a pyramid. Explore how to start with a broad base of endurance and top it off with intensity - the broader the base, the higher your peak performance will be.

1:00pm – 2:30pm

Flexibility Training for Athletic Performance: Dr. Jason Karp

This combination lecture and workshop will discuss and demonstrate the different types of stretching and flexibility techniques athletes can use. We will also explore the research to reveal some surprising things about stretching. Participants will have the chance to practice different flexibility techniques and learn which is the most effective.

2:45pm – 4:45pm

For the Long Run (Sports Nutrition): Dominique Adair

Learn the latest on performance nutrition for endurance training and competition. Presented by a credentialed fitness professional, Registered Dietitian and athlete herself, this lecture will examine nutrient timing (pre, during and post event), as well as discuss those supplements, bars and beverages to enhance endurance performance. If you are (or would like to be) an endurance athlete, this lecture sorts fact from fiction and delivers practical take-to-training tips.  Case studies complete the lecture and make it all real (time allowing).

5:00pm – 6:30pm

Sink or Swim - Endurance Swimming for Athletes: Connie Lagerhausen

Utilize the stop clock to your body’s advantage! This combination lecture/workshop will discuss and demonstrate how overall physical fitness can be improved through lap swimming, exercises and drills, plus identify the difference between endurance swimming classes and other swim programs. Participants should include athletes who do not currently incorporate endurance swimming into their workouts (but should!),current swimmers that just want to make their best better, instructors with a desire to teach endurance swimming to others, and athletes and/or instructors with an interest in organizing endurance swimming classes at their facilities.

FitnessFest Scottsdale 2011

Valley of the Sun JCC

April 28th - May 1st

The students in my class were asking me about your conference and I told them about some of the workshops I attended, what I learned and who was presenting. I told them the presenters are highly trained, hold high level certifications and some have their masters degrees or doctorates - people that know what they were talking about! These presenters know how to make fitness and wellness fun and bring that energy and knowledge to the conference participants. I get really energized after FitnessFest and come back with great ideas and tips. I share so much info with my class and they were really impressed with the quality of presenters. I don’t know how you do it, but your ability to gather such dynamic people for FitnessFest is greatly appreciated…not just by me, but by the people that ultimately benefit from it – my class. Thank you!
