Thursday September 30th Pre-Conference Workshops
3:00pm – 8:00pm
Nutrition: The Basics and Beyond:Dominique Adair
We have all heard that nutrition is "more than half" of the equation - whether your clients and class members are trying to achieve better health, weight loss/body composition improvements or performance advantage, their food choices will have an enormous impact on their success. You will leave this workshop with:
- A thorough understanding of nutrients and how they function in the body.
- Tools to assist health clients in improving their eating habits and developing a sound nutritional plan.
- Evidence-based information to help refute all those fad diets and replace them with sound weight loss strategies.
- A primer on sports nutrition including hydration needs, carb/protein/fat requirements, and supplementation for the recreational athlete.
This pre-conference workshop, developed and taught by a credentialed fitness professional and registered dietitan, will help you wade through the enormous sea of information about nutrition, sort fact from fiction and teach you how to incorporate nutrition into your practice while remaining within your scope of practice. Come learn the real answers to all the questions you get and become the ultimate wellness resource for your clients. No previous nutrition background necessary.
5:00pm – 8:00pm
MBAM: Pilates-Based Extreme Core Conditioning Method: Mylène Brock
The MBAM (Mylène's Balancing Act Method) develops dynamic trunk control and enhances one's body awareness, strength, flexibility and proprioception - all vital qualities to ultimate movement efficiency and safety. The MBAM movements are designed to improve fine neuro-motor control from the trunk, on out to the extremities. Core strength increases quickly, because the muscles of the whole torso stay engaged throughout, challenged eccentrically, isometrically and concentrically in fast succession. Although boards on swiveling wheels are used in the MBAM method, movements without the equipment will be reviewed as well.
The surprising thing about the MBAM is that it is as much fun (remember rolling around the gym in elementary school on those scooters?) as it is fundamental to total mind and body fitness. Finally, a playful approach to the often too serious "mind and body" work!
